シーズン１　第18話 Squirrel For a Day ドングリすくすく

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：George was helping get ready for breakfast while the man with the yellow hat got an early jump on some important work.

ジョージは朝食の手伝いをしていました、そのときおじさんは大事な仕事に取り掛かっています。

 

・get a jump on: (他より早く)スタートをする

 

テッド : This country air is just what I needed. Yea, by tonight, my speech for the tribute to Professor Wiseman will be perfect.

やっぱり田舎の空気が必要だなぁ。よし、今夜までにワイズマン博士を称える会のスピーチ原稿はできそうだ。

 

・tribute：賛辞、贈り物、尊敬のしるし

 

テッド : Her great vision. Her great insight exhibit, right? Uh...algae... Wooly mammoth... Her love of the wooly mammoth. Well...Yeah, okay, okay. I'll stop for breakfast.

彼女の素晴らしいヴィジョン。素晴らしい洞察力が示すのは、、、藻類、、、マンモス。彼女のマンモスにかける情熱。あぁ、分かった、分かった。朝食の休憩にしよう。

 

テッド : Well, fruit and eggs are good. These cupboads are too small for us. Maybe we should buy less food.

果物と卵は大丈夫だな。戸棚が小さすぎるんだね。食料をもっと少なめに買わないといけないな。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：The thought of having less food made George more hungry.

食料を少なくすると考えただけでジョージはおなかがすきます。

 

テッド : Well, we still need breakfast. Hey, I'll run to the market. Maybe you can finish my speech for me while I'm gone.

それでも朝食をたべないとね。マーケットまで急いで行ってくる。出かけている間にスピーチの原稿を仕上げてくれていてもいいよ。

 

ビル : Hey, George. I'm helping Jumpy out with extra nuts. He's storing food. Squirrels hide food in a ground. Then when they need it, they dig it out and have plenty to eat.

ジャンピーに多めにナッツをあげて手助けしているんだ。彼は食べ物を保存しているんだよ。リスは土の中に食べ物を隠す。そして必要なときに掘り出す、それで十分な食べ物が手に入るんだ。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：George never knew the ground was such a good place to store food. George and the man with the yellow hat needed a good place to store food. George could hardly wait to chew the rewards of squirrel style storage.

土の中が食べ物を保存するのにいいなんてジョージは知りませんでした。ジョージとおじさんにも食べ物を保存する場所が必要です。リス式保存法のご褒美が待ちきれません。

 

・chew:噛む、考えをめぐらす、よく考える

・reward：報酬、ほうび

 

テッド : Ummm. George, these doughnuts are delicious!    ジョージ、このドーナッツは美味しいな！

 

クイント : George, This fish is a phenomenal. Yeah.    ジョージ、この魚料理は素晴らしい。

 

・phenomenal：驚くべき、異常な、自然現象の、

 

テッド : Alright, now for breakfast then back to work on my speech. Where's our food? George, I think there’s a food thief on the loose. Why would someone steal paprika?

よし、朝食にしてからスピーチの仕事に戻るぞ。食べ物はどこ？ジョージ、泥棒が逃げているみたいだ。誰がパプリカなんて盗むんだろう？

 

・on the loose：まだつかまらないで、逃亡中で、

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：George wanted to explain that he had all taken care of.

ジョージは全部分かっていると伝えようとしました。

 

テッド : Do we have gophers? Gophers stole our food? My paprika! Why would someone bury paprika?

ホリネズミがいる？ホリネズミが食べ物を盗んだ？私のパプリカが！どうしてパプリカを埋めたりするんだろう？

 

・gopher：ホリネズミ

 

テッド : George, squirrels bury nuts and seeds, not orange juice. Orange juice doesn't belong in the ground. Let me show you what belongs in the ground, okay? 

ジョージ、リスはナッツや種を埋めるんだ、オレンジジュースじゃない。オレンジジュースは土に埋めるものじゃない。土に埋めるものを教えるね、いいかい？

 

テッド : See this? Nuts and seeds come from trees and plants.They can grow into new ones if they're not eaten. You see, that's a peanut Jumpy buried a while ago. It's started to grow. Now, when I was a boy, this tree wasn't here.

これを見て？ナッツや種は木や植物から生まれる。これらは食べられなければ木や植物に育つ。ほら、これはジャンピーが少し前に埋めたピーナッツだ。育ち始めている。僕が子供だった頃、この木はここになかったんだ。

 

テッド(子供) : Hi, Bouncy Squirrel.　やぁ、バウンシー。

 

テッド : I used to watch Jumpy's great grand father bury his food. That winter Jumpy's great grand father didn't eat that acorn. Then it's started to grow and just kept growing. This tree came from an acorn just like this. Now do you understand?

ジャンピーのひいじいさんが食べ物を埋めるのをよく見たもんだ。その冬ジャンピーのひいじいさんはそのどんぐりを食べなかった。そしてそれが育ち始め、大きくなり続けたんだ。この木はこんなどんぐりから生まれたんだ。分かったかい？

 

・great grand father：曽祖父、ひいじいさん

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：George thought he understood.　ジョージは分かった気がしました。

 

テッド : We need more orange juice so I'll walk back to the market. Then I really need to get back to that speech.

オレンジジュースが必要だからマーケットまで戻るよ。それから本当にスピーチの原稿に戻らないと。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：If an acorn could become a big tree... George wondered what a rubber band would grow into. Or a feather. George was going to grow all kinds of exciting things.

どんぐりが大きな木になるのなら、、、輪ゴムは一体何になるんだろう？とジョージは思いました。羽は？面白そうなものは全部大きく育ててみます。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：The man with the yellow hat hadn't finished his speech. George could grow the rest for him.

おじさんはスピーチの原稿を完成させていませんでした。ジョージは残りの部分を育ててあげることが出来るでしょう。

 

テッド : Brah-brah-brah...  ぺらぺらぺら、、、

 

ﾜｲｽﾞﾏﾝ博士：Thank you.　ありがとう。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：This would be the best speech ever!　最高のスピーチになるでしょう。

 

テッド : Hi, George. Have you been just sitting there waiting for me the whole time?  You weren't just sitting there waiting for me the whole time.

やぁ、ジョージ。ずっと私を待ってここで座って待っていたのかい？ずっと私を待ってここで座って待っていたんじゃないね。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：When the man looked like that, it meant George was about to hear a long lecture.

おじさんがこんな顔のときは、長い説明を聞かされることになります。

 

テッド : So, you see, seeds, nuts, acorns grow. My socks, the radio, the can opener don't grow. Okay, now, we have to dig up all those things you buried. George, where is my speach?

Okay, we have to dig up my speech first.

だからいいかい、種、ナッツ、どんぐりは大きくなる。靴下、ラジオ、缶切りは大きくならない。さて、埋めたものを全部掘り出ささないといけないね。ジョージ、スピーチの原稿はどこだい？よし、スピーチを最初に掘り出さないとね。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：Unlike Jumpy squirrel, George did know how to find what he wanted. Everything smelled like dirt.

リスのジャンピーとは違って、ジョージには見つける方法が分かりません。全部土の匂いがします。

 

ビル : Hey, you diggin a swimming pool?　プールを掘っているの？

 

テッド : No, Bill. George was being a squirrel and buried my speech. We can't find it.

ビル違うんだ。ジョージがリスみたいにしていて私のスピーチ原稿を埋めてしまったんだ。見つけられないんだ。

 

ビル : Well, I'll help. Wait, I know someone who can really help. She is a great digger. No speech here.

じゃあ手伝いますよ。待って、とても力になる人を知ってるんだ。彼女は穴掘りの名人だよ。ここにはスピーチ原稿はない。

 

クイント : Oh, diggin’ a pool there are ya?　プールを掘っているのかい？

 

ビル : George buried something and we're trying to find it.

ジョージがいろんなものを埋めてしまって、それを見つけようとしているんです。

 

クイント : Well, I've got a metal detector I use to find coins and serch down by the lake. Maybe that'll help.

そうだ、湖の近くでコインを見つけたりするのに使う金属探知機があった。あれは役に立つぞ。

 

ビル : Cool.　すごい！

 

テッド : Ah, well, my speech isn't exactly made of...      ええと、スピーチが出来ているのは、、、

 

クイント : Well, no... Ahoy!　ええと、ちがう。ほら！

 

ビル : Maybe it's what you're looking for!　もしかしたら探しているものかも！

 

テッド : No, my speech isn't made of...　いや、私のスピーチは、、、

 

ビル : Oooh. Are they pirate keys?　おー、海賊のカギ？

 

クイント : Eh, Could be. Maybe to a treasure chest.　そうかもしれないね。宝箱のカギかも。

 

テッド : Ah no... we... We're not gonna find my speech, and I can't rewrite it in time. I'll just have to skip the tribute.

あぁ、スピーチの原稿は見つからない、時間内に書き直すことも無理だ。会を欠席するしかなさそうだ。

 

ﾅﾚｰﾀｰ：George didn't have the talents of a squirrel, but he did have the talents of a monkey which meant he could see really well.

ジョージにはリスのような才能はありません、でも彼にはサルの才能があります、それはつまり、ほんとによく見えるんです。

 

テッド : You found it!　見つけたんだね！

 

ビル : The speech!　スピーチ原稿だ！

 

クイント : Well, that's not made of metal.　なんだ、金属製ではないんだね。

 

ﾜｲｽﾞﾏﾝ博士：So this is the air that inspired that wonderful speech. Are you planting something?

この空気があの素晴らしいスピーチを生んだのね。何か植えているの？

 

・inspire：鼓舞する、激励する、発奮させる

・plant：植える、種をまく

 

テッド : It's a long story. That's not a peanut. Looks like something you buried is growing. Maybe you are a little bit squirrel after all.

話すと長くなるんだ。これはピーナッツじゃないね。何か埋めたものが育っているみたいだ。おまえもちょっとリスみたいになったってことかもしれないね。
