動物のスカンクを表す「 skunk 」という単語が動詞だと「相手を完敗させる」という意味になるのが面白いですね。あの悪臭を放たれてしまっては、どんな敵も参ってしまうからでしょう。実際にスカンクにあの匂いを出されてしまいクマが逃げていく動画がありました。
他にも動物の鶴が「crane」で動詞は「(首を)伸ばす」や、カモやアヒルの「duck」は動詞になると「頭を下げる」になります。これらもその動物の特徴的な動きに由来しているのだと思われます。
シーズン２ 第２話
ナレーター : Nothing makes dusk special like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich… and a lighting bug chase. And nothing slams the brakes on fun like some strange cat eating your sandwich.
(ピーナッツバターとジャムのサンドイッチほど夕暮れ時に最高なものはありません。あとホタルとの追いかけっこ。そして変なネコが自分のサンドイッチを食べているほど楽しい気持ちを止めてしまうことはありません。)
This was one weird cat, but it needed to know whose food that was. George didn’t know what just happened, but he knew it stunk.
(変なネコです。でもそれが誰の食べ物か知る必要があります。ジョージは何が起きたのか分かりませんでした。しかしその生き物がくさいにおいを出したのは分かりました。)
This looked like a dark, cozy, excellent place to sleep all day.
(一日中眠るには暗くて、居心地がよくて、最高な場所に見えました。)
テッド : Now where did I leave that basket? We don’t want to wake the neighbors.
(かごはどこに置いたかな？近所の人を起こさないようにね。)
George, would you bring that up to the apartment while we get the rest of the bags out of the car?
(残りの荷物を車から降ろしている間に、それを部屋まで持って行ってくれるかい。)
ドアマン : You can relax now George. There are no skunks in the city.
(もう心配はないよ。街にはスカンクはいないからね。)
ナレーター : George almost screamed. What if it woke up? How could he keep it calm? Soothing music!
George rushed to show it to the Man with the yellow hat… Then he realized he forgot something.
(ジョージは叫びそうになりました。もしこれが目を覚ましたら？どうしたらおとなしくさせられるだろう？落ち着かせるような音楽だ！
ジョージは黄色い帽子のおじさんに見せるために急ぎました。そして何かを忘れたことに気づきました。)
テッド : George, did we bring the skunk home in the basket? We have to catch it without scaring it or, you know.
(ジョージ、僕らはかごにスカンクを入れて家に持ってきてしまったのかい？怖がらせないで捕まえないと、さもないと...分かるでしょ？)
ドアマン : Oh, we can’t let that happen! Split up! Catch that skunk!
(そんなことは無理ですよ！二手にわかれましょう。スカンクを捕まえろ！)
テッド : George, you didn’t see a wild skunk… oh yes you did.
(ジョージ、君は野生のスカンクを見たんじゃないんだよ... いや見たんだね。)
ドアマン : Don’t anyone move.
(みんな動かないで)
テッド : It’s, I mean, she’s happy. As long as nothing scares her, we’re okay.
(つまり、彼女はハッピーなんだ。怖がらせない限りは大丈夫だ。)
